If I can clean 405 pounds ....

Buddy Chad sent the man-group (context a group of 3-5 man friends + me who enjoy telling bad jokes and mostly not talking about work) this image in an e-mail this morning:

I probably should be offended - except this is what we do to each other - and if at any age, I can attempt to powerclean or deadlift 405 pounds, I'll be beyond excited.

So I'm a crier, but I almost started tonight in our first meeting when the special teams coach told a story about how he read an article in 1990 that about 120 women played high school football. He spoke at a high school after that with one girl on the team. He said, "Boys, you are on a special team.... because of the 1.5 million boys playing high school football today.... you have this teammate who is one of 120 in the country." She wrote him a letter about the USA football team and what it means to her that we are playing REAL football. He even he had her senior picture from 1990 .... incredible. My giants

This week I've devoted some time to trying to say thank you to all the people in the high school football program who helped me, invested in me, and taught me something about what it means to being a good coach. I found myself literally crying last night while I wrote a few notes, and I think I'd probably start the dang waterworks again if I looked at them. I thought about the concept of "standing on the shoulders of giants" this summer when I was selected to TEAM USA. It certainly was not by all my own effort - so many phenomenal people have invested in me their time, talents, advice, wisdom, training, technique, and most of all confidence. To the blackboard, batman...

Tonight's project: Paint chalkboard at house. I have our offensive plan for the season - need to review all the formations and get alignment, assignment and execution straightened out for my guys. Hope today's practice is less ugly than yesterday... tough with only four receivers but they are getting in shape! Need to study some DL tactics but Coach F and I work pretty well together. And so the season begins.
